Dr. Jan Römer is the ICRC’s Regional Legal Adviser for East Asia. Previously, he was legal adviser to the operations in Ukraine (2014-2017) and at the headquarters in Geneva with a responsibility for Europe, Central Asia and Latin America (2010-2014).

Jan also worked as an ICRC protection delegate in various countries such as Iraq, Georgia, Colombia, Zambia, Russia and Afghanistan.

Before joining the ICRC in 2001, Jan was trained and worked as a lawyer in his native Germany (1997-2001). He studied law at Ruprecht Karls Universität (Heidelberg) and Université de Genève (1991-1997) and received his doctoral law degree from Europa Universität Viadriana (Frankfurt Oder) in 2009.

Before joining the ICRC he worked as a lawyer in Berlin for two years
